Chapter 21
David

My eyes stung.
“No, I’m not.” I hoped she believed me.
“Where’d you get all that from then.” She kept backing away, leaving me helpless.
“I… I,” I began, “I can’t tell you.” I looked to the ground ashamed. “Please don’t be mad, but I can’t.”
“Why.”
Could she make this any harder? “Because,” it will put you in extreme danger, “I just can’t. I’m so sorry.”
She looked away and my eyes stung worse. I thought she was going to stop talking to me, but she looked back up and added.
“Let’s go.”
I started walking again, slow at first until she caught up. No one talked for the rest of the trip.

At last we reached the familiar metal building that looked as normal as anything. we walked up to front door and I knocked twice. CJ should still be here, he works late.
The door opened and CJ’s narrow head stuck out with a frown. Then he saw me and a smile illuminated his face.
“Come in.” He said roughly but kindly. “You staying for tonight?” CJ saw Josiphina and nodded.

she nodded back and CJ added, “A girl huh?” He winked at me.
I rolled his eyes and Jo blushed. CJ escorted us to a room in the basement with two twin beds across from each other.
“David,” he called to me, “quick talk in my office.”
I didn’t ask because I knew exactly why.

After our talk I crawled into the bed on the left side of the room.
    “Good night David.
    “Good night Jo.”

I woke up early the next morning and stumbled out of bed. Josiphina was already showered dressed and braiding her hair.
“Wow you’re gonna be late.” she teased.
Of course it was already 7:00.
“I’m leaving in five minutes,” she finished the braid and started slipping on her shoes, “You know school starts in thirty minutes, right?”
“Yeah, yeah.” I rubbed the sleepiness from my eyes. She ran up out the door and up the stairs. I wonder if I could miss first period. No, I’ll make it. I began to comb my bedhead. I won’t be perfect, but it won’t be bedhead.

1½ hours later I was in my seat taking notes on a physics lecture when a note fell on my desk. I didn’t look up but slid the note onto my lap.

At first I was confused, but I soon noticed the easy-to-know code.

meet me at the storage building fifth period

It had to be from Jo. I smiled at her but she was in her seat taking notes. She’s too good.
When fifth hour finally came I jumped out of my seat and tried to hurry outside before the rush of humanity came. I was already past the office when I heard my name.
“David! David wait!”
I didn’t turn around, but knew the voice came from Jake. Don’t say a word, just keep going. Almost there…
“David stop, there’s something I need to tell you! Stop!”
Huh? Now that I listened, the voice sounded urgent. Sorry Jo. I whipped my head around to face him. Then a wicked grin passed his face.
“You okay man?” He didn’t answer.
Jake pinned me against the wall with one hand and drew a knife with the other.
“Whoa!” I called. Was he trying to kill me?
“You should’ve been watching me. I was there all along but you never cared to notice.” He whispered.
I glanced down at his necklace once again and sure enough, there was an emblem of a cobra with poison seeping from its teeth clearly visible. I never did care to notice. I never did.
“You think you're so smart and good. You think you can trick me.”
I have to say for the first time in my life I was truly scared. My hands shook but my eyes remained locked on the knife. If he would move it just a tad to the right I could use a judo move on him.
He shifted.
“Maybe thats why I would fit in so good with your gang.”
“Huh?” He barely had time to say before I grabbed his wrist with both hands and flung him over my hip. He fell with a thud.
“Ooh. That’s gonna leave a mark.” I taunted, slowly backing away towards the exit.
“Shut up.” He was already up and running full speed at me. I was forced to make a run for it.
I threw open the doors and tore through the grassy fields in front of our school. But he seemed to be just as fast. Jake was faster than ever before chasing me with his knife.
“Stop right there.” The voice came from behind me and was so powerful it almost knocked me down. But it wasn’t intended for me.
I turned around and fell down in the grass in both exhaustion and relief. Josiphina. She always was there to save me.
Now she stood tall on two good legs holding what looked like a derringer resting in between her palms.
“Now back away slowly.” Her voice was so strong and her eyes so stern that she reminded me of a warrior. Maybe she is. Jake dropped his knife and backed away until he was pushing against the bricks of Carnasie High. Jo bonked him squarely on the forehead with the gun and he slumped to the ground unconscious.
She turned and walked over to me.
“You weren’t really gonna shoot him, right?” I asked weakly.
She sighed and plopped the pistol onto the newly-mowed grass.
“Well…” she looked down at me and laughed, “it's not even loaded!”
We both laughed and she sat down beside me.
“Do you think its worth it.” She whispered.
“What do you-”
“To go all this way and not even know what you’re looking for.” She finished. I guess I never thought about it that way. We didn’t know what we were looking for.
“A sign.” I said, not even meaning to aloud.
Josiphina took out a small piece of paper and held it out in front of her.
“What’s that?” I leaned over.
“I don’t know,” she replied, “it fell out of CJ’s pocket when, you know, we were at the YBYS like yesterday days ago.” I didn’t see that, “What do you think it is?” She handed the paper to me.
I flipped it over in my hand a few times. What could it be? It may not be something important, but CJ doesn’t normally keep unimportant things. He always is a “just toss it” kind of person. I didn’t think a blank scrap of paper would make his “save” list.
I ran two fingers along the front (or back?) of the paper. Was it wet? It did feel wet, but why?  I studied the paper and found that it was only wet in some places and seemed to form letters. Invisible writing.
“So, do you still have that, um, Invisible Pen thing?” I asked Jo.
“Yeah.” She pulled it out and laid it in front of me.
I turned on the light in the back and shone it over the paper. CS 4 4:30, it read.
“What could it mean?” I showed the message to Jo.
“Well,” she started, “4 is the fourth day of the week, and I think CS stands for Crysis Shelter.”
I was confused. “How do you know,” I asked.
“My mom used to volunteer at the Crisis Shelter. She took me there once so I know where it is. But, most people don’t. They tried to keep the shelter a secret.”
“So how would Gary and CJ get in… assuming they know where it is.”
“It’s been abandoned for several years,” she paused, “... its the perfect place to meet.”
I read the note over. “The fourth was yesterday, Wednesday.” She just smiled.
“That’s just the trick.CJ is spanish, right? So they believe Manday to be the first day of the week!” I processed what she just said.
“So the 4th is… today!” I jumped to my feet. “Its four o’clock c’mon!”
She stood up slowly and looked me straight in the eye. “You should leave this to me.” She said, “I’m good at… these sort of things.”
I think that was a challenge.

Chapter 22
Josiphina
We caught a taxi to Manhattan, a subway to Queens, and took a five minute walk, arriving 10 minutes early at the old abandoned stone building known only by few as the Whitney Crysis House.
I saw Gary Clark’s Corvette parked in the alley behind the mysterious meeting place. We were definitely at the right place.
“You stay hidden out here,” I whispered to David in the shade of a bush outside the front window, “It’ll be better that way.”
He said nothing.
“And I’ll signal to you. I’ll knock once on the walls to tell you to run, and twice to tell you I need help.”
He nodded.
“Fine be silent, whatever.”
I crept silently into the unlocked doors hoping to hide myself before CJ came and the two marched in. On my left was a giant living room with an old rotting chair and walls that needed a serious paint job. Nice place. To my right was the dining room that led to a kitchen with a large pantry that seemed to be almost in the center of the house. A perfect place to hide.
I risked a glance out the window to see Gary still waiting for CJ by his black Corvette. He suddenly whipped his head around and I had just enough time to duck under the windowsill before being caught. Was he expecting me? Is this a trap? Did CJ drop the note on purpose? Did they know I had an invisible pen? Did they know about my Mom? The idea sounded legit to me. I reached back and touched the back of my head where it had slammed on the windowsill. Blood. I groaned, and crawled to the kitchen pantry.
There was rats and mice all over picking at the remains of food leftover by the old volunteers. My first reaction was to scream, but I caught myself in the act and covered my mouth with both hands. I exhaled and my face turned white. Breath, I told myself.
I walked inside and many of the rodents scurried to the furthermost corner or through cracks in the walls. I settled down in the very center of the small room knowing that I could move to any side to eavesdrop on CJ and Gary’s secrets. I could discover what they’re holding back.
Ever since I started my lessons at the YGYS I felt different to the other girls. Gary always seemed to favor me. Jade was his second favorite so we competed a lot. But I always surpassed her. Jade could never catch up. Now as I snuggled into places where rats had invested I wondered if the joke was on me. Me and David.
A door slamming interrupted my thoughts.
“Don’t put your trust on her, old friend”  It was CJ’s smooth voice.
“I haven’t,” a scratchy low voice, Gary, “not yet.”
They were both here. And they were talking about me. The men passed into the dining room.
“She is a blonde,” CJ said. Jade?
I hadn’t thought about Jade for a long time. She was the one who passed David the note of the address of YGYS headquarters. If Gary knew this, he wouldn’t trust the spiteful girl at all. On the other hand, was Jade supposed to give the address away? It all came back to the big question. Are they on our side? The battle between me and Jade may have been over, but the war of good versus evil had just begun.

I listened intently with my ear pressed against the south wall. They were leaning against the wall of the abandoned dining room taking under their breath as if no one could hear. I could.
“I wasn’t expecting it, that’s all.” Gary said, “We told them once to back off with the USA. They just don’t listen.” I assumed that the partners were discussing the many invasions of the smugglers. But, what did they mean they told them to back off?
“I know,” CJ sighed, “with your connection and everything I thought you’d be taken seriously for once.” Gary’s connection?
Mr. Clark laughed. The sound rang through the empty corridors and filled my mind with memories of the past. Gary Clark one the best spy in the YBYS with CJ stealing a close second. All the girls admired him as the jolliest person that’s killed 12 people through the CIA. Gary also had many interactions with the MI6 and is known throughout America and Britain. The spies of America and Britain.
“I’m serious Mr. Clark.”
The world seemed to silence as Gary held his tongue.
“What are we going to do,” Mr. Martinez spoke quieter and I strained to hear his solemn words, “I don’t want to get David involved any more in this than we have to. This should be a battle of us versus them, but the children had to get involved.”
I held my breath to hear David’s name. Was he still okay out there?
“Yes,”  Gary let out a breath of his own, “but you could never stop him,” he paused, “after what happened to my girl…”
“We have to try, Gary, if we don’t they’ll get themselves killed, or even worse-”
“Don’t talk about it, please,” Gary interrupted. What could be worse than death?
At this point I was pretty sure this meeting hadn’t been a trap. But I still wasn’t certain. And I still didn’t understand what they had meant about putting their trust in Jade. At first, I thought her act of betrayal was her own. Now I wasn’t so sure. Had Mr. Clark put her up to it?

Chapter 19
David
Burglars! We were the burglars! The two attackers had ropes and knives, and I assumed they weren’t going to use them nicely. School security? Not likely. These men were covered in dirt and didn’t have much teeth or hair left.
“We’ve got men everywhere.” One said in a gruff voice, “Don’t try to hide.” He lunged at me.
“Who are you?” I tried to rip him off myself.
“If you don’t give our property back soon we’ll become your worst nightmare.”
I suddenly knew what he was talking about. I kicked and thrashed my arms about to scare him off. The attacker soon gave up and stood. Then to my horror he drew the blade. It shimmered like the moon and I felt a scream rising to my chest.  No, I told myself, stay cool.
He brought the blade down to my heart, but I turned and rolled over. If it works for James Bond, it can work for me. The knife pierced into the floor instead. Sure enough, it sank far enough that the attacker couldn’t pull it out. Yes!
He grumbled some words that I’m not going to repeat. Then, he tried to hit me hard with the rope. I scrambled to my feet and dodged each one, though not perfectly. He may have been slow and clumsy, but he got my twice in my left arm and I had to duck under the vice principals desk. Maybe there was something in the desk I could use.
The man kept cursing and thrashing out with the whip. There! In the middle drawer way in the back was a little revolver tucked in a black case. I crawled under the desk chair where I had a straight shot at the mans chest. I cocked the gun but the man didn’t seem to notice.
I had shot in the practice range with a revolver many times. I always hit straight on without hesitation. But now, how could I truly fire this? Sure, he was planning on killing me anyway, but he was a wretched man. Would I become like that if I fired my first gun?
Now I had to.
I dug my knees into the ground and pulled the trigger. The bullet soared out and hit him in his left leg. He stumbled back yelping for pain and fell back into another file cabinet. He would be out for a long time.
I heard rustling and whipped my head around to see the other burglar fastening a cloth over Josiphina’s head. When I pointed the gun at him, seeing what had happened to his friend, the second man fled, not even a word escaping his lips.
Jo. I ran over to her and untied the rope around her neck. She fell limply into my arms.
We had to get out of there, fast. I hoisted her up over my shoulder. First, I walked over to the man laying dead on the cabinet.  Around his neck was a necklace with and emblem of a cobra with poison seeping from its deadly fangs. I’d recognize it anywhere.

Chapter 20
Josiphina

I woke up looking into David’s blue eyes.
I was laying on a park bench a few blocks away from the school. David looked down to me and urged me to close my eyes again. I obeyed.

The next time I opened my eyes, David was pacing the grass.
“Why are we here?” I asked, startling him.
“Oh good, you’re awake,” he sighed and pulled me up. “I need to show you something.”
“Does it have anything to do with those burglars and the box I got shot over?” I needed to understand that.
“It’s the missing piece.”
I sighed and followed him over to an old metal slide that obviously hadn’t been used in a few years. He stuck his head under it and reached for a small box wrapped in “Happy Birthday” paper. I laughed.
“What’s this?”
“Unwrap it,” he instructed handing over the present. My birthday wasn’t for another 8 weeks, but I unwrapped it anyway. It was the small box I had delivered in community service.
“Open it.”
I obeyed. Inside was a stack of about ten golden tiles with artwork carved in. The first had a chinese character clearly visible on the front. The second carried a Chinese Dragon.
“What’s it mean…” I began.
“That’s part of a traveling display on it’s way to the MET. As in Metropolitan Museum of Art here in New York.”
I looked up, still not understanding him.
“Sit back down,” he sighed, “I’ll tell the whole story.
I sat back down on the bench, running my fingers over the tile of an emperor's face.
“So, um,” he began. (Not a very good start), “Yeah those guys, you know,” I nodded, “they want that box really bad. You probably know that… and so the reason is because those are priceless.” He pointed to the4 tiles, “They’re ancient Chinese tiles that were on their way to the MET.”
“I got that part.”
“Oh yeah sorry,” he said, and I could tell he was either reluctant to tell me, or just not good at speeches. “So these guys stole the traveling exhibit. This is only part of it.”
“So where’s the rest?” I asked.
“Its kind of,” He ran his hand through his hair, “... on its way to Brazil…”
“What!”
“These guys, who knows what they’re called, are smuggling famous artwork to the Neo Nazis in Brazil.” He looked straight into my eyes, “And we’re in they’re way.”
We were both silent for a moment. Then I looked down and said, “let’s go.”
It was too far and I was way to tired to walk back home.
“Do you know somewhere close we can stop and spend the night?” I  said.
He pondered for a second. “Yeah, I think so.”
He took of in some random direction, but I hoped at least he knew where he was going.
“We can stay at my building for tonight,” he looked at me and I eyed him, “the YBYS, of course.” David scowled.
I looked back down and hobbled another block in my boot under the pressure of the dead silence and the cold night air. The birds and the squirrels scurried away seeing us stumble down Garter Lane as if we were evil spirits prowling the surface. Suddenly, like a blast of wind, the strangest mystery hit me and I turned to face David as if seeing him for the first time.
“Wait,” I backed away from him as he turned around, “before we go anywhere I need to know something.”
“What?”
“Well, how did you figure all that out,” I kept backing away, “are you” I whispered, “are you one of them?”
He didn’t answer for a while and I began to think my guess was true. How could he? I wanted to believe he wasn’t but something in the back of my mind kept saying he was. Stupid mind, of course not. But was he?

Chapter 17
David
“Do you always wear that?” I asked Jake at school the next day.
He nodded and gripped the necklace hanging around his neck. “Never take it off. Even when I shower.”
“Oh.”
We glided (more like stumbled in the mess of people) through the halls glancing up at the bulletin boards, and the signs labeled “Attention!” that nobody reads anyway. We slipped into science 2 minutes early, and crawled onto Rebecca’s desk (she was still sitting there reading The Davinci Code). Jake fished out an apple from his back-pack, and started eating it in front of Rebecca, even though our backs were to her.
“Get lost.” She grumbled. But, of course, we didn’t, because who  purposely gets lost?
The classroom filled up with chattering students, and our teacher Belinda Kean stood up from her desk.
“Okay, okay, get settled down.” She said. “We’re starting chapter 17 today.”
I glanced over at Josiphina. She hadn’t talked to me all day, let alone looked at me. She opened her textbook up, and he must of felt the pressure of my gaze, because she looked straight up into my eyes. I quickly looked away, but instantly regretted it. She wasn’t mad. More like… mysterious? She had a mischievous glint in her eye. Where had that come from. I risked another look at her, but her eyes were already back to the textbook. Back to the girl I thought she was.
“Pass this to David.” The voice was barely above a whisper, but I recognized it as Jake’s. He leaned over and passed the note to Jessie who sat next to me. She giggled as their fingers touched. I rolled my eyes as the note plopped on my desk.  Picking it up I instantly knew it was from Josiphina. I carefully unfolded the paper and peeked inside.

  19-23-9-14-7-19 H 8-15-21-18

Code. Now she’s testing me. It was an easy code, the letters are numbers and the numbers are letters. So A would be 1, and 26 would be Z. It was simple, but would take a while. I had most of the code memorized, but I made a list of A=1, B=2, C=3, etc. I quickly but carefully decoded, bringing back memories of my first year at the YBYS association. It read, swings 8 hour. She wanted me to meet her at the swings during 8th hour. She wanted to tell me a secret, the one she tried to tell me before.
“David.” I barely flinched, too absorbed in my own thoughts.
“David Fisher!” My eyes shot up to meet Mrs. Kean’s black ones staring down at me through inch-thick glasses. “Can you answer that question?”
I grinned. “Of course, Belinda, 66.48%.”
She stumbled back a little and cocked her head, which begged me to add, “Did you think I wasn’t paying attention?”
“No…”
“Good.” As I brought my head back down I saw Jake’s gaping mouth. Even he thought for sure I was in my own world. But I was paying attention. In the back of my head I was doing mental math, multiplying, regrouping, simplifying…
I turned my attention to the note.
What do I have 8th hour today?
Physics, Grammar… study hall, of course I can miss that.
I bit my tongue to keep from smiling too hard. Finally.

Two more minutes. One minute and forty-five seconds. one minute and thirty seconds. I counted down the last minutes until 8th hour with a mischievous grin on my face. One minute… thirty seconds...fifteen seconds… RING!
I grabbed my books and bursted through the door into the world (or into the halls). I would have to make it outside before a river of kids comes my way. I passed the principals office and didn’t look back. I would seem suspicious.
I lowered my head as the fresh air filled my lungs. Then, by memory, I trudged to the swings.
“You’re late.” I looked up to face Josiphina, smiling brightly. I smiled too and set my books on the grass.
“You seriously brought those.”
“Yes, but can you get on with whatever I should know about CJ?”
She frowned and I heard her mutter, “Aw, I was in such a good mood.” She leaned her crutches up against the swing set, and sat down (not very gracefully) on a swing.
“Well… to start… do you know Gary Clark?” I shook my head. “No? Oh, well he’s the head of YGYS. So, anyway, I was at this play for Berkely Carrol and I saw them both.”
“CJ and Gary?”
“Yes. And they were whispering quietly so I thought I’d see what’s up.”
“Uh huh.”
“CJ was talking. He said that Gary couldn’t tell me anything and that the rest of the boys couldn’t even hint to you.”
Huh? “Hint about what?”
Her head drooped.
“Exactly.”
“And then when you confronted CJ he ran off.”
    “Yep.”
“So,” I didn’t know what to make of it, “you're saying that CJ and Gary are involved in something secretly together and we’re their guinea pigs?”
    “Am I not?”
    “No, I just…” I still didn’t understand.
Chapter 18
Josiphina
What did I have to say to make him understand?
“They’re using us.” Simple as that. “They think we’ll cooperate because we’re good students.”
“Are you saying that you don’t want to cooperate?”
I rolled my eyes about six times.
He smiled. “You don’t want to because they’re using us for their benefit, not ours.”
My eyes continued rolling.
“Well then.” He started to stomp off.
“Wait!”
He turned.
“Are you in?”
He stared up at the sky for a long time and I wondered if he was asking the angels. Finally he locked eyes with me.
“Why not.”
Yes!
“What do we do first,” he said.
“First,” I smiled, “we have to steal your permanent record.”

The hardest part wouldn’t be sneaking into the school. No, it would be getting out of the house without waking up Gloria.
I uncovered myself and stood up from the bed. A floorboard creaked under my feet and I held my breath. Nothing. I bent down and pulled away the rug. Last night I had marked all the squeaky floorboards with a post-it note. I followed the path with a flashlight and soon reached the bathroom door. Swinging the door open I peered inside. Nobody. And the window was still open! I quickly looked down to make sure I wasn’t wearing my favorite pajamas. Then I crawled to the window sill and jumped for it.
I have a two-story house. I have a boot on my leg. Did that stop me? Not a chance. I had blow up two air mattresses and stacked them below the window (because I’m not stupid). So, the fall wasn’t bad.
There I stood with my boot on my half-healed leg staring up at the window I just leaped from when what did  hear?
“Hey Jo.”
David. David was there. David was standing right behind me acting like he wasn’t a stalker but he still got here somehow.
“How,” was all I could say.
He just raised his eyebrows and set off to the school.
It was going to be a long night.

“So you aren’t afraid of getting caught?” He eyed me as we reached the top step of our school.
“No way, our school has the worst security system there is!” We both laughed out loud, and he pulled open the emergency exit door. Not a sound.
We made our way easily to the principals office and scanned the room. I slid to the file cabinet and looked under “F”.
“Fisher, Fisher.” I mumbled searching through, “ah ha!” I pulled David’s record out triumphantly. David looked up at me sort of shocked. He didn’t think I could find it?
“That was easy.” I grinned.
I didn’t see the hand that came smashing down on my head.
